Dr. Yano has studied the application of electrical engineering technologies
to life science topics. He graduated from the Department of Electrical
Engineering of Miyagi National College of Technology in Japan in 1990 and
then from the Faculty of Engineering at Chiba University in Japan in 1992.
He studied magnetic compass navigation of Pacific salmon as a master and
doctor course student at the Graduate School of Science and Technology
at Chiba University. Those studies ranged from electron microscopic analyses
of biomagnetic sensors to GPS-assisted biotelemetry studies of open-sea
migrating salmon. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1997, he was appointed as
an Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Horticulture in Chiba University,
where he changed his study subject from fish to plants. He also studied
at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden as a Visiting Researcher
for two months in 1999. Direct effects of electromagnetic field exposure
on plant growth and development were investigated intensively until 2001,
when he moved to the Faculty of Life and Environmental Science in Shimane
University in Japan as an Associate Professor. Controlling the aerial environment
of plants using photonic and electrical engineering technologies has been
his major study subject at Shimane University. He is currently developing
solar photovoltaic systems for energizing greenhouse environment control
appliances and LED systems for use in energy-saving horticultural plant
production. He has been a Professor of the Faculty of Life and Environmental
Science in Shimane University since 2013 and the Chairman of the Department
of Regional Environmental Sciences during the 2016-2017 academic years. He was appointed as a Visiting Lecturer at The University of Tokyo in 2010 and as a Visiting Professor at the University of Sassari in Italy in 2015.
